Wairarapa suffered a one wicket loss to Horowhenua-Kapiti at the Central Districts under-15 boys cricket tournament at Rathkeale College on Tuesday,
It was Wairarapa's first loss in seven matches this season but they came close to pulling off what would have been a remarkable victory.
Horowhenua-Kapiti were well and truly in the box seat when Wairarapa batted first and were all out for a paltry 67. Top scorer was "Mr Extras" with 16 while Mark Cummings made 13 and Matthew Stringfellow 10.
A superb bowling and fielding effort, however, saw Wairarapa climb back into contention. At one stage they had Horowhenua-Kapiti tottering at 26-6 and at 53-9 a local success seemed very much on the cards. However, a 15-run last wicket stand saw Horowhenua-Kapiti get their noses in front.
Bowling for Wairarapa Quenten McKenna took 3-18 off eight overs, Daniel Ingham 1-26 off nine overs, Oliver Burt 1-7 off six overs, Sue Davies 2-19 off six overs and Matthew Stringfellow 1-8 off three overs. Wicketkeeper Jamie Holmes also left his mark with an excellent stumping and run out.
Wairarapa were 69-2 in their second innings when play ended with Matthew Stringfellow making 30 not out and Daniel Ingham 20.
