Coach Fleur Jane was delighted with the improvement shown by the Wairarapa under-13 Rawleigh trophy girls hockey team at their recent tournament played in Levin.
They finished fourth overall after having the misfortune to lose their semi-final match with Hutt Valley in a penalty shootout.
Eventual tournament winners Hawke's Bay were Wairarapa's first opponent with the Bay winning 3-0 but Wairarapa bounced back from that defeat to later beat Central Hawke's Bay 5-0 on the same day.
Another 5-0 victory, this time over Rangitikei, followed and left Wairarapa playing Manawatu for a place in the semis.
That game was drawn but Wairarapa had done enough to make the top four.
The semi-final match with Hutt Valley was a thrilling affair with Wairarapa creating a number of good scoring chances but failing to find the net. At fulltime the teams were still level pegging and so the penalty shootout ensued with Hutt Valley doing best there.
Wairarapa then played off with Wellington for third and fourth and again they created the greater number of scoring opportunities only to lose 1-0.
Maddy Irwin was named as Wairarapa's player of the tournament.
