Wairarapa came close to winning the under-17 section at the Marj Jenden Trophy netball tournament hosted by the Kapi Mana association last Sunday.
They finished equal first with Wellington Black and Kapiti which meant the trophy winner had to be decided on goals scored.
Having the advantage in that respect was Wellington Black who had scored 67 goals to Wairarapa's 61.
Those two teams had met in the first game of the day and the evenness of the contest was illustrated by the final score of 16-all.
Extra time was then play to find a winner with Wellington Black edging out Wairarapa there.
In other matches Wairarapa beat Kapi Mana 15-11, Wellington Gold 17-14 and Kapiti 12-9.
Indications were that the side, which has a good mix of experience and talented newcomers, will develop into a strong unit as the season progresses.
Especially pleasing at the Kapi Mana event was the form of Kelsey Butcher at goal shoot and Rachel Mawson at goal keeper, both of whom came into the team at the eleventh hour and measured up well.
