KEY POINTS:
A two-year-old boy is dead and a four-year-old child was taken to hospital after a car flipped on a bend near Kaikohe, in Northland, last night.
Police said the crash occurred on State Highway 12 at Whitecliffs, about 8km from Kaikohe, about 11.30pm when the Subaru station wagon rolled multiple times taking a moderate bend.
Detective Sergeant Russell Price said the people travelling in the car had left the scene before police arrived, but were found at the ambulance station at Kaikohe.
Ambulance staff tried unsuccessfully to revive the two-year-old boy, and a post-mortem would be carried out on the child today to determine cause of death.
The four-year-old was taken to Whangarei Hospital with moderate injuries, Mr Price said.
He said police would like to hear from any motorists who may have been flagged down or driven past the crash scene.
The name of the dead child not would be released until police had spoken further with the family.
