A 2-year-old boy was left in a serious condition after being run over by a van collecting kindergarten children in Flaxmere this morning.
The toddler was taken to Hawke's Bay Hospital at about 9am with a skull fracture and broken pelvis. Because of his serious condition, he was then taken to Starship hospital in Auckland. Police said the boy had been hit by a kindergarten van doing pick-ups in the Flaxmere cul-de-sac.
Acting Traffic Sergeant Nic Rennall said police were unsure how it had happened.
They were not sure of the sequence of events, it was not a hit and run. The the van had been "caught up with", and the driver was speaking with police, Mr Rennall said.
Mr Rennall said he thought the boy had been playing in the cul-de-sac, which was quite common in the street.
