A man whose wife and daughter were in a car that ended up wedged between two buses yesterday is amazed no one was seriously injured.
"My wife was waiting at the zebra crossing for someone to cross," the North Shore man said. "The next thing she knew, there was a bus in the corner of the car and [it] pushed her over into another bus."
The Hyundai Santa Fe was trapped between two Birkenhead Transport buses around midday.
The driver's husband, who asked not to be named, said the impact crushed the car's windscreen and bonnet. "It's not as if he just gently nudged it," he said. "They're just very, very lucky."
Police Inspector Steve Kose said it appeared the bus driver may have hit the accelerator instead of the brake. "He's tried to swerve the bus [to avoid pedestrians on the crossing]." Instead the bus smashed into the Hyundai, pushing it into a parked bus on the other side of the street. The police Commercial Vehicle Investigation Unit is investigating.
