A man with a "significant leg injury" was airlifted to hospital in a serious condition after two trucks collided in heavy fog on State Highway 1 at Meremere, south of Auckland.
The crash brought traffic on the busy thoroughfare between Waikato and Auckland to a halt during rush-hour.
It is understood one truck pulled out of an intersection amid fog before the crash and was "T-boned" by the other.
The Auckland Westpac Rescue Helicopter team helped the driver of the smaller truck, who after being trapped for more than an hour was freed by firefighters.
Staff reported that the man, in his 30s, suffered a "significant leg injury".
