Two teenage girls are dead after a car lost control and plunged down a steep bank in Whangarei.
Inspector Cornelius Kluessien said the car had five teenage girls in it and ended up on the lawn of a Whangarei property at about 1.30am this morning.
Mr Kluessien said the two girls who died were in the back seat of the car and had to be cut free from the wreck by the fire brigade.
He said the three other teenagers had minor injuries.
Mr Kluessien said it appeared some of the passengers were not wearing seat belts.
