Two main highways in the South Island will be closed for most of the long weekend, but State Highway 1 south of Kaikoura, which usually has restricted hours, will be open in the daytime.
State Highway 82, through Waimate Township, shut at 6pm yesterday for the Waimate 50 Street Races. The road is closed between Hight and Dash streets and will reopen at 2pm on Monday.
State Highway 87 from Middlemarch to Kyeburn is closed between 8am and 6pm most of Labour Weekend for repairs to the Taieri River Bridge at Kokonga, but will open for 10 minutes every hour on the hour to let traffic through.
NZTA said road users should plan their journey and expect delays.
State Highway 1 south of Kaikoura has been closed this morning, but will reopen at 7am. It will stay open until 8pm today. The opening hours tomorrow and Monday are 7am to 8pm.
