State Highway 2 at Te Puke has reopened following a serious accident in the Bay of Plenty town this morning.
Two cars collided head-on at the intersection of SH2 and Manoeka Rd just before 5am, and the sole occupants of each car have been taken to hospital by ambulance.
The occupants were both trapped in their vehicles following the collision.
They were taken to Tauranga Hospital by ambulance in a serious condition, a St John Ambulance spokeswoman said.
The road was closed for more than two hours, but has since reopened.
