Two people were seriously injured in a collision with a horse overnight in the Gisborne region.
A man is fighting for his life, and a woman was also injured in the crash, in which their car hit a horse on State Highway 35 at Te Araroa around 1.30am, St John Ambulance northern communications shift manager Norm Ngatai said.
Both were unconscious when paramedics arrived at the scene, with the woman trapped inside the vehicle, he said.
She was in a serious condition, but improved once she was extricated, and was taken to Gisborne Hospital with moderate injuries.
The man had suffered critical head injuries, and was also rushed to Gisborne Hospital, Mr Ngatai said.
