A man and a woman are in a serious condition after being thrown from a car following a collision near Murupara.
Emergency services were called to the crash on State Highway 38, about 3km west of Murupara, about 6.30am today. Senior Sergeant Dennis Murphy of the Rotorua police traffic unit said the collision was between a white saloon travelling towards Murupara and a ute heading the other way.
A Rotorua man in his 20s and a 19-year-old woman from Murupara were in the saloon and were thrown from the vehicle.
Mr Murphy said both were in a serious condition. The Rotorua-based BayTrust Rescue Helicopter flew the woman to hospital and the Waikato Westpac Rescue Helicopter transported the man.
Mr Murphy said the ute had extensive damage but the driver didn't suffer any injuries. He said the driver was wearing a seatbelt.
