Two seriously hurt in Waikato crash

State Highway 3 is closed north of Te Awamutu following an accident which has left one person in serious condition.

Emergency services were called around 3.20pm after two utility vehicles collided 3km north of the Waikato town.

Police spokesman Andrew McAlley said one person has been taken to Waikato Hospital in a serious condition and firefighters are currently cutting another occupant out of one of the vehicles.

That person's injuries are considered serious, but not life-threatening, he said.

Diversions are in place for traffic, until the road is able to be reopened.
