The pair were scuba diving off Omaha Beach, north of Auckland, when the engine on their dive boat failed, leaving the boat drifting away from them.
Two scuba divers have been rescued from a sticky situation at Omaha Beach after their boat engine failed while they were under water.
The divers were returned to their vessel by lifeguards from Omaha Beach shortly after 3pm.
Surf Life Saving Northern Region spokesman Ron Murray confirmed lifeguards were involved in the rescue.
Murray said police sent the Eagle helicopter into the air above the water, which helped to locate the divers.
Lifeguards sent out an IRB to haul the divers back to their boat - which had not been anchored properly and had drifted around a kilometre away from the divers.
A police spokesman said police were advised the divers' boat had broken down and drifted away while they were in the water.
Neither of the divers required medical attention following the incident, he said.
