Two rescued from Mount rip

Police said the man had swallowed a considerable amount of water and was admitted to hospital.

An Auckland woman and a local man were rescued from a rip at Mt Maunganui.

Police and the Mt Maunganui Surf Lifesaving Club responded to reports of a woman in distress off the beach on Wednesday.

A local resident saw the 63-year-old woman struggling and went in to help her, but got into difficulties himself.

A boat from the surf club arrived a short time later and rescued both.

Police said the man had swallowed a considerable amount of water and was admitted to hospital.

The woman, who was holidaying at the Mount, was checked by St John staff at the scene but did not need medical treatment.
