KEY POINTS:
Two young people are being spoken to by police in relation to this morning's shooting of an Auckland student who was on his way to school.
The 15 year-old Kelston Boy's High student was shot in the finger and is at Waitakere Hospital with the pellet still lodged in his hand.
Police spokesman Kevin Loughlin said police are talking to two 16 year-olds but no arrests have been made.
"On this occasion the finger injury suffered by the victim was relatively minor but it could have been far more serious if the student had been hit in the head or the eyes. The dangers of any BB gun should be obvious to everyone," Mr Loughlin said.
The car was being driven past the school at about 9am.
School principal Steve Watt said the pellet lodged in the finger of the student and he had been taken to a medical centre to have it examined.
Mr Watt said the shot was fired from a black Nissan Skyline on Archlynn Rd this morning and there was nothing to suggest that the car or the person who fired the shot was connected with the school.
He said there had not been anything like the incident at Kelston Boy's High School in his time and he had been at the school since 1994.
"We're advising students of what happened and if anyone saw anything, we are asking them to report any sightings of the vehicle," Mr Watts said.
Mr Loughlin earlier said police were speaking to people about the incident and had some "strong leads".
"We believe only one shot was fired," Mr Loughlin said.
He said the factors around the incident were still being determined.
