A man and a woman were seriously injured when they were thrown from their out-of-control car on the road from Castlepoint, in Wairarapa, about 7pm.
Masterton fire services and police were called to the intersection of Masterton Castlepoint Rd and Masterton Stronvar Rd to find the driver and passenger ejected from their car after it had left the road and rolled into the fence and ditch.
Ambulance crew had to perform CPR on the woman. The pair were taken to Wairarapa Hospital. It is believed one of them was airlifted by Life Flight's Westpac Rescue helicopter to Wellington.
Masterton Fire Service station officer Garry Nielson said one person had been ejected out the back window, and the other out a passenger window.
He believes neither was wearing a seatbelt. Masterton Castlepoint Rd was closed to allow the Serious Crash Unit to investigate the cause.
