One teen in stable condition after quad bike rolls on Waimārama Beach in Hawke’s Bay

Three people were injured after a quad bike rolled in Hawke's Bay.

Three people were injured, two seriously, after a quad bike rolled on Waimārama Beach east of Hastings on Wednesday afternoon.

As of Friday, one of the two seriously injured teens had been discharged from Hawke’s Bay Hospital while the other was in a stable condition.

A police spokeswoman said the incident happened on the beachfront of the Waimārama domain area.

Police initially said they were called to the incident on Waimarama Rd, just outside Havelock North, at about 1.50pm on Wednesday.

“Police and ambulance were called after reports of a quad bike rolling,” a police spokesperson said.

A Hato Hone St John spokesperson said staff transported two patients in serious condition to Hawke’s Bay Hospital.

“One patient in a moderate condition was assessed and treated at the scene.”

A Te Whatu Ora Hawke’s Bay Hospital spokesperson said one female in her teens had been discharged, while another female in her teens was stable as of Friday.

Ngāti Kahungunu leader Bayden Barber placed large limestone boulders to block vehicle access to Waimārama Beach earlier in the month, advocating for a total ban on vehicles on the beach due to safety concerns.

The move was controversial with some residents and visitors who use vehicles on the beach.

Driving on the beach is banned in an area in front of the surf club between 8am and 8pm from Labour Weekend until April 1. Driving at speeds over 20km/h is illegal at all times.
