Two people died when their car hit a tree and rolled in rural Tirohanga, near Taupo on Friday night.
The crash happened on Tirohanga Rd shortly before 11pm, fire services said.
A third person was seriously injured in the crash and fire services had set up and emergency landing pad for the rescue helicopter, however a fire services spokesman said he was unsure if the helicopter would be able to fly due to weather conditions.
St John could not immediately be reached for comment.
