KEY POINTS:
Two pedestrians are being treated in Auckland hospitals after being struck by vehicles in separate incidents.
South Auckland man is in a serious condition after being run down by a car on Heathberry Close in Papatoetoe just after 1am.
Police were told of the incident near an out of control party they were going to.
The man was taken to hospital with critical injuries and police said they feared he would die.
A few hours earlier, a man was hit by a car as he walked along Seaview Rd, in Glenfield on the North Shore. He is also suffering serious injuries.
The weekend road toll already stood at one after a driver died in a crash on State Highway 5 - the Napier to Taupo road.
The dead driver's car was the only vehicle involved in the crash about 20km west of the intersection of SH5 and SH2, between Hill Road and Linden Close.
