National would protect recreational fishers from commercial interests by making it explicit in law that their rights come first. It would also work with Fish and Game NZ to maintain trout as a true recreational fishery by requiring any Queen's Chain or riparian right to be surrendered whenever a property by river or coast was said to be an overseas interest.
New party Outdoor Recreation New Zealand would also give saltwater recreational fishers priority. No licences would be needed for saltwater recreational fishing or gathering seafood for non-commercial purposes.
The party would oppose further marine reserves until their scientific benefit was proved.
