Two men remain in a critical condition after their car was cut in two in a high-speed collision with a rubbish truck on Auckland's North Shore on Friday.
Senior Constable Karl Bevin, of the Waitemata serious crash unit, said the driver of a Nissan Skyline lost control after rounding a left-hand bend and slid across the lanes into oncoming south-bound traffic.
Mr Bevin said it appeared the truck driver had veered towards the left-hand lane to try to avoid the collision but the Nissan Skyline slid sideways and collided with it.
Two men from the car were taken to Auckland Hospital, where they remained in a critical condition this morning. They are yet to be identified but are believed to be in their mid to late 20s.
The truck driver and a male passenger were shaken but unhurt. They had been heading downhill on their way back from the Redvale landfill site when the crash happened just after 1pm.
Police investigations are continuing.
