A Capital team including two Wairarapa players won the national under-21 men's hockey title in Tauranga last week.
Daniel Juno of Dalefield and Rowan Yeo of Wairarapa College were part of a side which played outstandingly well throughout the tourney, winning five of their six games and drawing the other.
Their 2-2 draw was with Auckland in the preliminary rounds and the two teams met up again in the final with Capital winning another hard fought encounter 5-4.
In other games they beat Central 4-1, Midlands 9-1, Canterbury 5-3, Northland 4-1 and Southern 4-1.
The news was not so good for the Capital under-21 women's side at their national event, also played at Tauranga. They had two wins over Southern, the first by 3-1 and the second by 4-1, drew with Midlands 3-3 and lost to Canterbury 2-3, Auckland 0-5, Northern 0-3 and Canterbury again 0-1.
Inluded in the Capital line-up were six Wairarapa players- Ditte Van Vliet, Carla Burt, Sophie Wickens, Wendy Hull, Taasha Henson and Holly Gaskin- and Wairarapa's Lance Hare was coach.
