An Auckland sculptor, an Akaroa writer and an Australian photographer have been named as the first artists to receive an Irish artistic residency from a London-based trust.
The Richard and Sophie Nicoll Trust in a statement today said Waiheke Island sculptor, artist and poet Denis O'Connor will take up the Rathcoola Residency based in Cork, Ireland, this July.
In January next year writer Fiona Farrell of Akaroa will take up the six-month residency and next July documentary photographer Charles Page from Queensland will be the resident.
They were selected from 110 applications from Australian and New Zealand artists and writers.
The Rathcoola Residency was established in November by expatriate New Zealander Robyn Carrig who is chair of the trust and owner of Rathcoola. It offers accommodation, studio space, a stipend equivalent of $NZ21,758 and return economy airfare to Ireland.
It is aimed at assisting writers and visual artists with an existing record of achievement in their artform the opportunity to further develop and concentrate on a specific project for an uninterrupted period without over-riding financial concerns.
