KEY POINTS:
Two people are dead and one is on life support after a car crash in Northland in the early hours of this morning.
Senior Sergeant Gordon Gunn said four people were in the car that crashed at 12.20am which was heading towards Ahipara on the Kaitaia-Awaroa Rd.
"The fourth occupant fled the scene prior to police and ambulance arrival and the extent of his injuries, if any, is not known,"
He said alcohol and speed were thought to be factors in the crash.
Sgt Gunn said the serious crash unit were investigating and believed no other vehicle was involved.
