'Atrocious conditions' were partially to blame for a horror crash in Marlborough this afternoon, which killed two tourists.
The two dead foreigners will not be named until their identities are confirmed and their families are contacted.
Police confirmed one driver and one rear passenger of the same vehicle, both males, died after their vehicle collided with a ute on the Pelorus bridge between Nelson and Blenheim.
The tourist vehicle's front female passenger and the ute's female driver were both in Wairau Hospital with serious injuries.
Senior Sergeant Peter Payne of Marlborough Police said it appeared one of the vehicles had crossed the centre line.
