A man and a woman are dead following a fatal crash between two cars in Canterbury this afternoon.
The cars collided at a stop controlled intersection near West Melton just after 2.30pm, police said.
The driver of one of the cars was uninjured, but the male driver and female front seat passenger of the second car both died at the scene.
Senior Sergeant Pete Stills said drivers needed to be careful on icy winter roads.
"Unfortunately this is the second fatal crash in Canterbury today.
"We urge all road users to drive to the condition and be vigilant when approaching and entering intersections.
"Winter weather conditions mean that all road users need to take extra care when travelling on our roads and increase following distances and allow plenty of time to complete their journey safely."
Canterbury Police were at the scene of the crash and said Halkett Road, Calders Road, McKays Road and Sandy Knolls Road were likely to remain closed while Canterbury police serious crash unit complete the scene examination.
The deaths have been referred to the coroner and police were seeking the deceased's next of kin.
