KEY POINTS:
Two people are in hospital with minor burns after a house was badly damaged in a suspicious fire in a south Auckland suburb today.
The Onehunga house was burning fiercely when firefighters arrived about 5am.
They were told two people were trapped inside the burning house and firefighters donned breathing apparatus to search for them.
However, Fire Service spokesman, Jaron Phillips, said the two people had apparently got out just before the first of four appliances arrived.
"They were glad they got out the way they did. They were pretty lucky," he said.
They were taken to hospital with minor burns.
He said the fire was being treated as suspicious and police and fire safety officers were trying to find out the cause.
