KEY POINTS:
Two people were injured after a fire started in a gemstone lab in an Auckland suburb this morning which at one point was attended by 13 fire engines.
A Northern Fire Communication spokesman said the fire, at 412 Lake Road, Takapuna, was in the upstairs floor of the lab.
The fire was under control and several appliances remained at the scene on Auckland's North Shore, he said.
A firefighter and the owner of the building were both receiving treatment for injuries from the fire which started about 7.15am.
It is understood the firefighter received burns while the owner suffered from smoke inhalation.
St John Ambulance team manager Keith Hall said both were transported to hospital this morning.
Mr Smith said the fire has now been extinguished but with the density of buildings in the area, there could have been fears that other buildings could be set alight.
Fire safety officers are at the scene investigating the fire.
Police are also expected to investigate the scene because the building housed precious stones, he said.
Thirteen fire engines from across the Auckland region were earlier called to the burning building. About 60 fire fighters were at the scene and the road was closed.
