A woman was stabbed and a man suffered head wounds in linked attacks in Palmerston North last night.
Detective Sergeant Gary Milligan said a fight between two men broke out at a house on Cottleville Court about 10.25pm, resulting in one of them being injured.
A woman, who was in the house, was also attacked and received a superficial stab wound to one of her arms.
Mr Milligan said that the dispute continued at a Carlisle Street house about 11.35pm with the injured man being attacked again, this time with a hammer, which had been recovered by police.
He was in the intensive care unit at Palmerston North Hospital with head wounds.
Scene examinations were being conducted today at both houses, with potential witnesses being identified and interviewed.
A 38-year-old man was arrested and charged with assault, and Mr Milligan said more serious charges may follow.
The man was to appear in Palmerston North District Court today.
