Dalefield chalked up their second successive win in the Wellington premier division women's hockey competition when they beat Karori 3-0 at the National Hockey Stadium in Wellington on Saturday.
All three of the Dalefield goals came in the second half after they had dominated the first half possession-wise but failed to make the most of the many scoring opportunities they created.
Positional changes made over halftime which saw promising youngster Amanda Pottinger go to centre half and Ana-May Playle to striker seemed to provide extra punch to the Dalefield attack and they pulled away for what, in the end, was a comfortable victory.
Coach Rochelle Retter conceded the lack of goals in the first half had been a concern with the worry being that Karori would score against the run of play and have their confidence boosted because of it.However, with the experienced Playle calling the shots up front enough scoring chances were taken in the second half to keep Karori on the back foot.
Apart from Playle and Pottinger other Dalefield players to shine included Wairarapa College student Georgia Burton who had a superb game at right half and the always-relaiable Karen James who, along with Burton and Playle, got her name on the scoresheet.
The Dalefield men were beaten 6-3 by Northern United in their Wellington premier division match also played at the National Hockey Stadium but coach Mark Fenwick was pleased with their performance against quality opposition. It was only in the early stages of the second half where Northern Unjited completely controlled proceedings, otherwise Dalefield generally gave as good as they received.
"It was a pretty promising effort really, we got three good goals and maybe deserved another one or two," Fenwick said.
Peter Sigvertsen had a strong game on attack for Dalefield as did Jesse Workman while goalkeeper Orin Lockyer came through a busy game with credit.Sigvertsen (2) and Mark Scully were the goal scorers..
