Two men were seriously injured when two truck and trailer units crashed on a South Canterbury bridge, sending one of the trucks through the railings and onto the riverbed below.
State Highway 1 remains closed after the crash on the Temuka River Bridge south of Temuka, about 20 minutes north of Timaru, about 1pm today.
The men were taken to Timaru Hospital, both in serious condition.
One man suffered head and torso injuries, while the other suffered head and leg injuries.
Inspector Rick Jury of police southern communications said one of the trucks went off the bridge and into the riverbed.
