A minor nose-to-tail car crash escalated into a road rage incident that ended with two men being taken to hospital.
The incident happened about 11.45am on Saturday on Heretaunga St West, Hastings, when three cars crashed into each other.
The occupants of either the second or third car are believed to have left their vehicle and assaulted two men from the first vehicle.
The assault occurred outside a Firestone garage. Two employees from there, seeing the two men running toward a parked car, ran out to intercept them.
One of the employees, who did not want to be named, said he didn't see the crash, but said he saw two men being attacked.
Police have charged two men, aged 17 and 24, with assault, and are continuing inquiries.
