Auckland's motorways were the scene of traffic chaos yesterday, fired by more than 20 crashes in two hours.
The spate of accidents started at 12.30 pm, when a boat fell off its trailer on the Southern Motorway near Ellerslie, blocking two lanes.
The hour-long closure brought traffic to a standstill back to Hobson St.
On the other side of the harbour bridge, police dealt with four accidents, one involving four cars, in quick succession.
Around 3.30 pm, an empty passenger bus and two cars collided in the northbound fast lane near Mt Wellington, causing minor injuries.
A collision between a taxi and a car towing a caravan on the motorway between Symonds St and Gillies Ave added to the havoc.
"There is a significant amount of chaos out there," said Inspector Bill Harrison, of the Northern Communications Centre.
Police could not explain why more than 20 accidents should occur in a few hours on a clear, dry spring day.
