Two honey brands recalled due to 'possibility they contain sharp metal'

More than 1000 pots of Taku Honey and 60 pots of Beecorner honey are being recalled due to the possibility they may contain "sharp metal foreign matter".

The two companies sourced a batch of honey from the same supplier, Westervelt Owhaoko Honey. The Ministry for Primary Industries issued the two notices this week, saying a batch of the honey could contain sharp metal.

The Taku batch being recalled is the 500g Honey with Lemon, marked as batch WHA1190.

The Beecorner batch being recalled is the 500g jar of lemon honey, marked as batch 1190. Both have a best before date of 13/09/2020.

Beecorner products are sold at local markets in Auckland, while Taku Honey is sold at specialty retailers throughout the country.

No other batches or other Taku Honey or Beecorner branded products are affected by the recall, MPI said.

Customers are asked to check the best before date mark or batch number on the label.

A Westervelt Owhaoko Honey spokeswoman said the honey had been on the market since October last year and there had been no reports from customers of foreign matter being found.

"We believe it was all contained to a small number of pots in our warehouse right from the start of the batch - but safety is our number one concern."

No one has reported being injured while eating either brand of honey, but it should not be consumed, MPI said. Anyone who has eaten the honey and has concerns about their health should seek medical advice.

Customers should return the products to their retailer for a full refund.
