One of two young girls hit by an alleged drink driver in the Bay of Plenty on Saturday has been transferred to Auckland for treatment.
The 4-year-old Ohope girl and a 7-year-old from Rotorua were on the footpath when they were struck by a vehicle reversing from an alleyway on Pohutukawa Ave, Ohope, about 2.20pm.
A 43-year-old local man has been charged with two counts of drink driving causing injury and is to appear in Whakatane District Court tomorrow.
The 4-year-old was taken to Whakatane Hospital in a serious condition and transferred to Starship Children's Hospital in Auckland late on Saturday night.
A hospital spokeswoman said she was in a stable condition yesterday. The 7-year-old was treated and discharged from Whakatane Hospital. Police said the girls were known to each other but were not siblings.
