KEY POINTS:
Two people understood to be travelling with four other family members were killed when the car they were in crashed south of Waiouru this morning.
The crash was still being investigated but police said the southbound vehicle rolled after crashing off State Highway 1 at about 10am.
Three other people in the vehicle were taken to hospital with moderate injuries. The two deceased were from Auckland.
Emergency services closed the road while firefighters extracted the occupants from the vehicle and cleared the scene.
The road was reopened early this afternoon.
