A moderate earthquake has struck near Kaikoura this morning.
Geonet said the magnitude 4.4 quake occurred at 7.22am, and was centred 25km northeast of Kaikoura, at a depth of 20km.
The jolt was reported felt lightly in Kaikoura and Richmond.
Earlier a magnitude 3.4 earthquake struck at 7.17am, 20km east of Taumarunui, at a depth of 5km.
It was felt lightly around the Central Plateau.
