Two drivers have been cut out of their respective vehicles with the jaws of life following a head-on crash near Taupo this morning.
The collision occurred on State Highway 1 between Taupo and Turangi, near the Motutere Bay Holiday Park, about 7.30am, a Taupo police spokeswoman said.
Northern Fire Communications shift manager Jaron Phillips said both drivers were in a status two (serious) condition and the fire service was extracting them with the jaws of life.
One rescue helicopter had landed at the scene and another was en route, he said.
No diversions were in place and the public was asked to avoid the area, police said.
