A man has died after their car hit a bank in the second fatal crash in Northland this morning.
The latest incident, which happened about 10.30am, occurred on the corner of State Highway 12 and Tokatoka Rd in Ruawai, about 84km southeast from Whangarei.
Inspector Lou Alofa, from the police northern communications centre, said the deceased was the sole occupant of the car.
Diversions are in place for motorists.
Fire Service senior communicator Dallas Ramsay said the deceased was trapped in the vehicle.
And about 5.30am a woman died after a car veered off the road, flipped and crashed on State Highway 1 at Mata, 22km southeast of Whangarei.
Police spokeswoman Sarah Kennett said the woman was thrown from the car and died when the car rolled on top of her.
She said police serious crash investigators were still looking ino the cause of the crash and it was not clear if the woman was wearing a seatbelt.
Three others were injured in the crash but it was unclear how serious their injuries were.
When they arrived they found a car turned upside down in a dry ditch just off the road.
Traffic was reduced to a single lane but police said it was returned to two lanes by 10am.
A third crash victim has also died today. Ms Kennett said a woman who was involved in a car crash in Kerikeri on Friday night has died in hospital today.
