Two men are dead following a crash just south of Tauranga this morning.
Police say the deceased are a 68-year-old man of Greerton, Tauranga, who was driving a light truck, and a 55-year-old male motorcyclist from Pyes Pa, Tauranga.
The pair were killed in the crash around 9.20am on Oropi Rd near the State Highway 29 intersection. Both men died at the scene.
"It is too early to say what happened before the crash, but they were travelling in opposite directions and we do not yet know if speed was a factor," Mr Glencross told NZPA.
He said it was a clear and sunny when the crash happened and driving conditions were excellent.
The scene has been cleared and the road opened just after midday.
Enquiries are continuing into the cause of the accident and will be led by traffic investigators from the Tauranga South Police Station.
The names of the deceased will not be released at this stage, police said.
