KEY POINTS:
Two people have died so far on the roads this weekend.
An 18-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman from the Horowhenua region were killed when the car they were in crashed into a power pole in the early hours of today, a Levin police spokesperson said.
The accident happened on State Highway 56 near Rangiotu, 17km southwest of Palmerston North, about 12.30am.
The two who died were sitting in the front and rear passenger seats on the left hand side of the car.
The driver and another passenger in the rear of the car survived the crash.
Police said the cause of the accident was still being investigated but it appeared that the car had failed to full negotiate a gentle right hand corner leaving the road and crash into the concrete power pole.
