KEY POINTS:
Two people are dead and another critically injured after a 4WD crossed the centre line and smashed head on into another car near Matamata last night.
Police said the northbound 4WD failed to take a slight left hand bend on State Highway 1 north of Tirau and crossed the centre line into the path of the south bound car,
The two dead were in the car.
The 4WD driver, who was airlifted to Waikato Hospital, was today reported to be in a critical condition.
The names of the dead people would be released after relatives had been told, police.
