Two people are dead after a tree hit a vehicle near Hastings today.
One person died at the scene, about 5km southwest of Hastings, and the other in hospital.
Police were alerted to the crash in Maraekakaho Rd about 4.45pm, Senior Sergeant Mike O'Leary of Hastings police told NZPA.
The pair were initially reported to have been trapped in the vehicle.
It was not known if the vehicle was stationary when the tree fell on it, he said.
Emergency services were at the scene, but no other details were available.
