Alcohol and speed are believed to be factors in a fatal crash near the Otago town of Mosgiel last night.
Dunedin police said a car was travelling south on State Highway 1 around 17km west of Dunedin around 10pm when it crashed into a powerpole at the Mosgiel Interchange.
The car came to a rest in a vacant lot behind housing in the suburb of Kilmont Park.
The driver, Andrew Riki-Alan Condon, 25, of Milton, died at the scene and his 15-year-old passenger was taken to hospital with minor injuries.
A senior police officer said alcohol and speed were both thought to have contributed to the accident.
Police said they were unable to reveal the identity of the dead man until his family had been informed.
