Two people have died on roads already this weekend.
A 44-year-old woman died after the car she was driving collided with another vehicle just south of Winton at 10.30pm yesterday.
Invercargill Acting Senior Sergeant Mark Lucas said the collision, on State Highway 6, appeared to have been head on.
A 58-year-old male driver of the second car is in intensive care at Invercargill Hospital.
Mr Lucas said the drivers were both the sole occupants of the vehicles.
He said alcohol could have been a factor.
In Auckland, a 7-year-old girl died and two other people are reported to be injured after a crash on a highway near the Mt Richmond Domain last night.
Police said a northbound truck clipped the back of a southbound people mover with carrying five people.
The truck driver was uninjured.
The highway was closed but diversions were in place.
