KEY POINTS:
Two women have been killed on the roads before the start of the official Easter holiday road toll.
The women died when their car collided with a campervan on State Highway 26, between Te Aroha and Paeroa in the Hauraki Plains.
They died at the scene, an ambulance spokesman said.
Police said the accident happened just before 2pm. The road is closed while the Serious Crash Unit investigate the cause of the crash. Diversions are in place through Rawhiti Rd.
The women were making a right turn into a marae when they were shunted from behind by a following car, into the path of an oncoming campervan.
The deaths came just two hours before the official start of the Easter holiday road toll at 4pm. The women are yet to be identified.
Two people in the following car were taken to Waikato Hospital with moderate wrist and facial injuries. The two people in the campervan were not injured.
Diversions are in place for traffic travelling in both directions at SH26 and going along Rawhiti Road.
