Two local people are dead and a third seriously injured after a car and milk tanker collided near Blackball, 25km northeast of Greymouth, this morning.
Blackball fire chief Neville Sheehan said the crash happened just after 8am. The third person was "very seriously" injured, he said.
The road was wet at the time of the crash.
The road was shut from the Blackball turn off through to Ikamatua, and was expected to be closed until late afternoon.
The serious crash unit had been called in from Nelson.
