Two dead after stabbing incident

A woman who was stabbed in Manurewa this morning has died, after a man was found dead nearby soon after the incident.

Police were called to a Great South Road address about 11:30am and took the woman, who had multiple stab wounds, to Middlemore Hospital in a critical condition.

She died this afternoon during surgery.

Police believe the stabbing is linked to the death of a man whose body was found near a rail bridge a short distance away.

Detective Inspector Jim Gallagher said the man was found a short distance from the scene, near railway lines.

"He is believed to have been involved in the incident. The male was dead on police arrival and both police and ambulance staff attempted to revive the male without success.

"Police are not at this time looking for anybody else in relation to the incident."

Disruption was caused to the main trunk railway line as a result of the incident. The railway line has been re-opened with reduced train speeds in the small affected area in Manurewa.

Police urge anyone who may have seen a male Indian in his thirties walking along Great South Road, with a bag in his possession to call police immediately on 09 261 1300 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
