Two teenagers are dead and a third is seriously injured at Whangarei Hospital after their car crashed into a river late last night.
Police said the crash happened on Western Hills Drive in the Whangarei suburb of Kensington shortly before midnight.
The car left the road, went down a bank, and flipped into the river.
Two 19-year-old males, the driver and passenger died, and a third male, 19, was seriously injured.
Acting Sergeant Leon Shepherd said the cause was possibly high speed, as they were seen by witnesses travelling faster than the 50km/h speed limit and overtaking vehicles prior to the crash.
Mr Shepherd said it was not yet known if the male teenagers were killed on impact or drowned.
